If you're on a laptop, then edidfail isn't an issue, because laptops are not
probed by DDC -- their panels are dealt with via static tables in the BIOS.  How
was X displaying before you added HorizSync/VertRefresh?  What was the effect
after you changed it?  And I'd still love to see your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, of
course ...
