xorg also didnt detect my vert sync refresh rate on my desktop which led
me to default 640x480 also.  

seems that when my screensaver comes on after a while it turns the
monitor off per the default settings in gnome and i can't get my laptop
to respond just sits with black screen, so for now i shut off power
management to see if that helps.

But i also see a speed difference in 2.9.4 from 2.8 unless its
something ubuntu is doing?
