If browser mode was turned into "as Browser" (alongside "as Icons" and 
"as List"), as I suggested, Nautilus could be smarter about choosing a 
mode the first time you ever open a folder. If a brief inspection (if 
that can be done fast enough) showed the folder to be dominated by 
deeply hierarchical subfolders, it could default to "as Browser". Else 
if the folder contained more than ~50 items, it could default to "as 
List". Else it could default to "as Icons".
