If we want press coverage wthout paying for an advert, maybe we need to
think about organising something that is weird, funny, remarkable, and yet
still serious enough so that the press would _want_ to write or film about
it? How can we get the mainstream media interested?
Can we try to set a record of some sort, linked to the use of Ubuntu? A
remarkable feat?
We need to brainstorm about coming up with something that would
_automatically_ attract interest from the media. What would be better than
to get it in the main evening news on television, even if it may only be 1
minute?
Maybe I am drifting off from reality too much, but I think anything that
draws attention automatically would have a much greater impact than _any_
paid advert can ever accomplish! Exactly why Dirk refers to adverts about
iPhone. They're almost non-existent, and not required, because of the
automatic attention this devices generates.
More down to Earth, an alternative to attract attention is to print as many
flyers as we can, and give these away on a busy Saturday in the major
cities? A flyer that highlights the main attractive points of Ubuntu in
order to get people interested? That would only cost paper, ink, and a
Saturday of effort, of everyone involved.
Just a braindump...
Cheers,
Jaap Hoetmer

Good idea. For the areas that have commuters, ads in 20 Minuten and
perhaps Blick am Abend surely reach a large audience, although I'm not
exactly sure if it's the kind of audience that cares enough about
computers to read something like that?
A quarter-page ad in 20 Minuten in the entire German-speaking part of
Switzerland costs CHF 10'485.-, for example. A 1/8th page is still
5295.- [1]
1/8th page in the "Events" list is only 2390.-, but I'm afraid that in
that sort of layout, the party would not be visible enough.
All prices are about half that amount if you reduce to the Zürich area
only. I'm not an expert with ads or layout terms, so maybe there are
cheaper options. Is anyone more skilled and wants to have a look at the
various price lists? :) [1]
I'm sure a paid ad would work better -- none of the mainstream media
took notice last time, although I've sent our announcement to every
event announcement address of every paper I could find.
