8.04 GUI doesn't load due to glitch in Smart Update

The following command should work:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

This will replace the xorg.conf file which is probably bad anyway but
you might want to make a backup copy of it. You'll find it in
/etc/X11.
