8.04 GUI doesn't load due to glitch in Smart Update

Try booting into recovery mode and make a copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf 
(call it something like /etc/X11/xorg.conf.orig) then remove the 
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot.  X should figure out that there is no 
conf file and work with "defaults".  If that doesn't work you can try 
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to regen the conf file.
