You may not need to re-install at all. If you install gparted, you may
be able to remove the windows partition, and expand the Ubuntu
partition in it's place.

I think it's best to use the GParted LiveCD for that purpose. And,
yes, best to have a backup of all your data from the Home folder just
in case.
