Ubuntu can't find sound card

Hi, Math (Cool name!)

I had not tried the command as you typed, but I tried just now and it gives me the result shown below.  I also tried some variations on the theme, no results.

FATAL : Module nm256_audio not found

The Synaptic Pack Manager shows me there are alsa-base and alsautils in there.  I read them, and there is reference to having to create my own from the "alsa sources" .  Truth is I have not the foggiest idea on how to do this, don't even know how to look for the "sources" or what to do when I find them.  I am not totally ignorant on a little C coding, but Linux is alien to me and I need some gidance if I am going to accomplish this sound card thing.

The same text (alsa basic) also tells me about some pre-build module packages in the Debian archive...  whatever that is.

Thanks, Math, for any more help you throw my way.  I really want to make this Linux thing work.

 Don't worry about "not doing this right", you knocked at the right door ;)  I will try to help you the best I can, however it may require a few emails to get your soundcard up and running.
  
 First of all, did you try the following command?
 sudo modprobe nm256_audio
 
 If you did, you may want to check in the Synaptic Package Manager for a package named "alsa" (for more info on Synaptic PM, visit the following link :  https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/synaptic.html).

But the "multimedia" applications say "can't connect to sound server, or
something to that effect.

Do you fellows have any idea where I should go to get some info on how
to troubleshoot this? 

Please note I am no hacker, just a Windows user trying to convince
myself that Linux is worth the effort.
