Tony, in your case I second Shane's suggestion that you use the CD to do
the upgrade, only a few extra packages will be required to be downloaded
separately.

The suggestion for aptitude is to use it whenever you read some
instructions that say "sudo apt-get install foo".  Substitute aptitude
for apt-get.

Aptitude has built in help, use "?" to access this basic help or use the
"Help menu" and read the User manual.

Please do yourself a favour and just use Synaptic!  You'll find it a lot
easier to use and sometimes aptitude and Synaptic can get out of sync
which is not always easy to correct.
