I am wandering if Graham has simply played with the live cd and
thought Ubuntu was installed after doing that!

thanks I did type in my user name but nothing happens,I just can't go the
next step.When I reboot my computer I get the selections to use such as
windows XP which still opens as before.

Graham,

When you were installing ubuntu (assuming this is the install version)
you would have entered details about a 'user', such as name, username
and password.  Try using those.
