well I too have a cable modem, and conect via DHCP,
and I have the for 2 reasons:
1) the cable-modem only has 1 exit, and I have 2 computers
2) <paranoid> I don't trust that much ANY ISP in my country </paranoid>
(to be w/out a firewall, I mean)
so what I did was to sit the router between my (2) PC(s) and the cable
modem,
then my 2 computers connect directly to the router,
and the router uses the IP the ISP geves me, and it gives the 2 PCs a net
submask [or something like that was called]
that way if anyoune wnats to get inside my PC, it bumps in the router
instead =P
(I guess it works like that, I'm too a newbie in networks and networking)
AFAIK cable-modems have no built-in firewall (at least in my country, dunno
'bout yours)
but I'd apreciate if someone corrects me on that
