Um, sorry, I disagree.  ALSA supports the same read()/write()
programming model that OSS does (and several more).

What's your problem with it?  And what alternative do you suggest?  OSS
is not reasonable as it bypasses all the advanced features of ALSA like
software mixing, routing, and volume control.
