I remember that the Ubuntu developers used to say that it was important
to support upgrade paths without relying on ubuntu-desktop. I don't know
if that policy has now been jettisoned, but I would certainly agree with
everyone on this thread who has said that the problems people have
encountered with upgrading simply because they used the command line
rather than the graphical interface have encountered a bug.
