try: sudo adduser --extrausers testuser

oops, sorry, I forgot to mention, there is a config option in
adduser.conf that makes it default to using --extrausers even without
specifying the option, this is not enabled by default yet (until it got
fully tested).
for the moment you still need to specify the option on the commandline
to make it use the alternate db.
