I suggest you talk with other Austrian translators and get informed
about what conventions current German translators use. I'm sure all the
German translation teams have some sort of glossary that tries to
minimise the use of "different" words between de_AT and de_DE so all
German users are happy with just one translation (de, with no country
suffix).

This is what most translation teams do, even the Spanish team (with
speakers both in Spain and South America). The few notable exceptions
are en_CA, en_GB, en_AU and pt and pt_BR, but these are justified
enough.
