That's the tool you use to configure printers, and it has worked for 
me.  However, like you, because of their good Linux support, I tend to 
use HP printers.

My experience in general with printers in Linux, is if the printer has 
been around on the market for a year or so, it will generally work on 
Linux.  The 'latest and greatest' new printer may not work on Linux, but 
give it a year or so, and it might.

I had an Epson printer that used a special color profile not on Linux, 
and just to change the ink cartridge, I had to fire up my Windows 
partition (which I really hated).  It's probably the reason I stick to 
using HP printers.

There may be problems like not showing ink-levels, or using a custom 
color profile (that has the colors a bit 'off' when using the standard 
RGB profile).  Also, in the case of an all-in-one printer, the scanner 
may not be usable on Linux.

But the printer itself will probably work.  Sometimes you have to 
configure it as an older model of the same printer.
