I'm glad cloning with Clonezilla works for you :-)
If you create an OEM install, it will be straightforward to create
unique systems after the installation. That might be an alternative in
the future. See this link

If the prepared method does not work, I know a fairly simple was to work
around such issues, that works with some community re-spins of Ubuntu
(but at least when I tested last time, the prepared method worked with
Lubuntu and Xubuntu). I use the OEM method with tarballs for the One
Button Installer.
