Installing a program from a tar.gz file in Lubuntu.

Good morning,


Could anyone walk me through installing a program tar.gz. I need to install Smart Notebook in our computer labs and I am not familiar with the process. Can I do this straight from the terminal.


On their site they give two options for Debian. The plain files and the pre-packaged?? Which one should i choose.
