Mine is a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, Intel Core2Duo from 2009. I've upgraded the package in question without any display problems:
apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-intel:
Installed: 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4
Candidate: 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4
Version table:
*** 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ utopic/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
I feel people can use
lspci -vvnn | grep -i -E 'vga|driver'
My output of that is below:
$ lspci -vvnn | grep -i -E 'vga|driver'
