[Lubuntu-comms] The Story of Lubuntu

Hi,

12.10 will receive backports. Yes, we are in the crazy world of 12.10 being
supported for longer than 13.04. That is the 'ubuntu' view, and the lubuntu
devs already do SRU. An SRU is a Stable Release Update. Please notice the
small, but massive difference between 'UPDATE' and 'UPGRADE' as people do
get the two confused.

Once a release is out, the ONLY alterations allowed are for fixing bugs and
security updates. You are NOT allowed to add in new functionality, bring in
new functions etc.

So, as lubuntu has changed so much since 12.10 was released, and fixes to
bugs will be applied... you are running an old lubuntu. As one simple
example, 12.10 will still be supported when 13.10 and even 14.04 LTS come
out - by which time we will using FireFox as the default browser for a full
release cycle.

It is for this reason that ubuntu technical board decided to make non LTS
desktop releases 9 months only. Life in the tablet / mobile / phablet
markets are moving so fast, that keeping up means people can either go for
"desktop" release every 6 months with 9 months support (which gives them 3
months to upgrade for FREE), or, for the ones who do not want an singing,
all dancing touch screen / TV tuner etc. They can take a deep breath and
go.... "I want a stable OS that is supported". I saw the discussions flying
backwards and forwards and also believe that our Technical Board made the
correct decisions:

1: We will not go back on the promise of the support life of 12.10
2. We will set 9 months on desktop systems to allow developers more time to
push the limits, less time spent on making SRU's.
3. We will retain the LTS system for desktops so that people can have
stability and assurance. SRU's will be made faster, as there are less
versions to support.

Regards,

Phill.
