Problem with upgrade of Lubuntu 11.10 to 12.04

Interestingly, it was by doing three successive "partial upgrades" that
the system seemed to sort things out, and as far as I can tell,
everything is currently working properly on that machine.
If strange things start happening on that machine, I will just
re-install.
