apt-get upgrade doesn't upgrade the Kernel but dist-upgrade does

I don't use GUI to update/upgrade my system, I just use the Terminal :)
Most of people or some of them at least don't really know what is going on
when using an GUI tool for such task. That is why I use the terminal to
understand what is going on.
After I do this:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I do
sudo apt-get autoremove
I don't need to use Synaptic or Update Manager any more :)
