I've only ever used nouveau (like, literally, ever) and never had a
problem with it. I'm not a gamer nor am I doing any heavy math GPU
processing and if that were the case, maybe I'd need to get more under
the hood than nouveau might allow since it is reverse engineered, but
for normal use, i.e. displaying, it has always worked quite well. In
fact, most of the complaints I hear from people surround how fragile
the proprietary drivers are, especially in terms of long-term upkeep.

Ultimately there should be little difference between the [various
implementations of software-properties][1]. Furthermore, we're not the
only ones that use the particular (Qt) version. Kubuntu does, as
evidenced in [their request to make use of it][2]. AFAIK the difference
between the two is the interface, not the backend.
