Sure it is possible.

You should first make a backup (including "/etc"). Then during the 
installation you should select manual partitioning. For "/" select the 
partition you are using now and select the current file system. 
Furthermore make sure that the partition is NOT set to be formatted. 
This will preserve "/home" and I think also "/usr/local".
