Installing Kubuntu after failed upgrade

Hi,

Is it possible that upgrade to the newest release can fail? I think so.

But the main question is: is it possible to install Kubuntu after failed 
upgrade so that my HOME directory keep untouched when all other stuff 
would be fully replaced by fresh installation?

On my HDD I use default structure set by Kubuntu installer.
