I don't think there is an easy way. While I was primarily searching for 
a way to get around the not yet properly working filters, the result is 
more or less the same as for your problem. The only solution I found so 
far was to install a local IMAP server and move your mail to that IMAP 
server. Then you can even access your mail from other machines and/or 
with other email applications. I found a detailed description at [1] 
(ignore the whining in that article). While the author wants to meve 
away from Kmail, you can of course use the same setup with Kmail/Kmail2. 
In your case, you would install that IMAP server on both 10.04 and 12.04 
and use the same data path for the IMAP server.
