Yes, that should work. A friend of mine who needed pavucontrol to make 
skype work only installed that package. Actually I don't see an 
advantage of installing Ubuntu first and adding kubuntu-desktop later, 
but I can only speek about 2 Kubuntu systems which were upgraded past 
Lucid.

OTOH, when I wanted to try out Unity (the new Ubuntu desktop for Natty), 
it wasn't enough to add the ubuntu-desktop package. That seems to be a 
bit more complicated nowadays.
