Clay you are correct and that is what happened and that I have solved. 
My desktop is now the non-netbook one without the gry "shortcut bar".
I thought that while we were on the subject of the shortcut bar somebody 
would explain how to use it as I didn't succeed in changing any of the 4 
shortcuts that appeared originally. I couldn't add or remove shortcuts.
