I think that Errol is talking about the gray space underneath the top bar, the 
area where the application icons appear in the Search and Launch activity. The 
Shortcut bar.

Assuming that you have followed Tom's instructions to change from the 
Netbook setup to a Desktop setup, you may still need to change the actual 
Activity that you have from the Search and Launch to Desktop, or whichever you 
prefer.

Right-click on the desktop somewhere, Then Desktop Settings. Then change the 
layout to Deskop.

What probably happened is that the installer (erroneously) detected a monitor 
resolution that is used by netbooks, so it activated Netbook instead of 
Desktop.
