Actually, intel chipsets generally don't have much 3D capability - if
you want to play a game that heavily depends on 3D support, you
should try a different graphics card...
Also, Ubuntu and Debian somewhat assume that you always have a
working internet connection. While they will work without one, you'll
be severely limited in your choice of software. You might want to
look into distros that have everything you need on a DVD or set of
CDs. I have good memories of Suse in that regard. It probably is a
more appropriate distro for a beginner with a flakey or no internet
connection...
Ubuntu/Debian can be pretty hard to manage without a decent internet
connection, even when you have the DVD... (that's why I went with the
mirror solution, which is not something a beginner should be doing.)
