Flashing the bios

It depends if you can do it from a USB stick.  If that is the case, then it's 
easy since you never go into an operating system, it's all done from the 
motherboard's code.  Basically you just pick the bios's flash option, stick in 
the usb stick, and reboot.  Takes about three minutes if everything goes well.  
I would take a backup copy of the bios if you can, or confirm that flipping some 
jumpers would restore the bios to the original version.  This saves many 
headaches if something does not go right.
If you have to use windows, there are ways to get a stable version of XP on a 
"trial" basis.
What is the make and model of the motherboard?
