I see this too.

I see other intermittent sound-related problems as well, on a system on
which I have never had a sound problem in any prior incarnation of Kubuntu.
 Sound seems to have suffered a major regression in karmic. I'm sure it
works perfectly for some (most?) people, but that's certainly not the case
here.
