I've also had this problem and there seems to be no clear-cut answer. 
I've tried the sudo alsa force-reload thing, and it did ask me if I 
wanted to permanently forget about my sound chip. I said no, and no 
sound returned to my flash.

There seems to be a lot of vague answers. Some people say its 
pulseaudio, and that killing that makes sound return. But not in my case.
If I find anything, I'll post it
