Limitation in display setting

I followed these instructions: http://blog.shevin.info/2007/04/dont-panic-if-
you-broke-graphic-in.html
  and it somehow works.  Not perfect as after each reboot I have manually to 
change the refresh rate from 50 Hz to 75-80 Hz.  I don't know why after logout 
it does not keep the latest settings...
