upgrade 8.04 -> 9.04+kde3: how?

You can do so, but it is not an automated process as Jaunty 9.04 does 
not have KDE3 natively. You can follow the directions found here:
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Jaunty
But it still looks like you are just upgrading to 9.04 (and KDE4) and 
then adding in the KDE3 packages.
