You're right: you can't be sure :-)

The standard way to remember passwords is via KWallet, so if you turn the 
wallet off, apps can do what they want - including not bothering to save 
your password at all.  KMail, I recall, saves passwords in the config files 
if there's no wallet, and warns you that they won't be encrypted.
