What is x configuration and how do I go about correcting a problem in the x configuration?

I still have javascript problems that one mentioned might have something to do 
with widgets.  I just removed the x from enable desktop effects and reinstated 
same to see if that would help.  When I tried to check the Enable Desktop 
Effects it recommended changing the Compositing type.  I tried without success 
and returned to OpenGL, but although Desktop effects are checked, they do not 
all work.  Is there a remedy?  Are the two problems related?
