Putting your /home on a separate partition is thoughtful, but in this case, I
would first try to fix the installation. This isn't Microsoft Windows where
you reinstall for shortcuts with the wrong icons.

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
