I am not sure but I think it was me :)

The apt-get and adept routes of installing and updating work great ...
until there is a problem. If there are dependencies problems they simply
say "broken" or "## packages will not be installed". They do not help at
all in identifying or resolving the conflict.

The aptitude program is much smarter about that. If it sees a conflict,
it will tell you what it is and even offer possible solutions. Its
ability to ferret out solutions is actually quite amazing.

As far as I can find there are numerous "blessed" means for updating
your system: apt-get, aptitude, adept, update-manager, synaptics and
probably others. They are just alternatives with varying interfaces and
function. For example, adept is not your friend when X will not start...

I always do a safe upgrade first so that I can see what the packagers
have decided are safe and which ones are not. Rarely do I not accept the
implied "not-safe" updates. I just like knowing that I am stepping onto
less solid ground and if things go south I look at those updates first.

I think that Chuck is saying that it did not and is confused by the
fact. Frankly I am too. What you say, I believe to be true but Chuck's
experience is to the contrary. If ever I run into the same problem, I
will take Chuck's advice and look at the archives to insure that they
are indeed being cleaned.

Sometimes I wonder. Were our faith able to stand upright and look around, would it be looking down at the mustard seed or standing in awe of the height and breadth of it.
