1?  It's his previous kernel.

Because that one becomes "0" and all others increment.

... actually just the latest - you could uninstall kernels _older_ than without changing the ordinality of 2.4.16

Also you can use "default saved" to get the last chosen kernel.  Be sure to
set the following in the automagic options:

## should update-grub add savedefault to the default options
# savedefault=true

And then run "sudo update-grub" again.
