Well formed HTML is probably more imprecise than a word document across
computers; why it is even imprecise when viewed via KHTML (konqueror) vs.
gecko (firefox) on the same computer.

You could try having them save to word processor documents to RTF (microsoft
rich text format). I am not sure how open that format is, but it is ascii
based, not binary, and can be opened by just about any word processor worth
using, including abiword and kword.
