where did my /etc/inittab go???

Edgy uses upstart which, by default, doesn't install an /etc/inittab 
(tho it will read it if you make one).
But on to your question...
You want the default run level to be runlevel 3, and you probably don't 
want to have to create a new inittab, ok.
All you need to do is edit /etc/event.d/rc-default to do it, change both 
the "telinit 2" parts to "telinit 3" and that should boot you right in 
to runlevel 3.
Though I haven't actually tested that, I don't see what it wouldn't work.
