Upgrading programs

Exactly.

Leaving well enough alone is usually the best course.  Building a new version 
of something can sometimes wind up being so complicated that you wind up with 
a Linux From Scratch system on the far side of the ordeal.  I've been through 
a few rounds of that, and it taught me patience in waiting for the package 
maintainers to wade through that sea of misery for me.  It also taught me an 
appreciation for package maintainers!
