My box is a Dell Dimension 2350, 2 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM.

I did have _many_ open files. In my one instance of Kate, there were 40 files
open at once. I closed all but 7 and then quit Kate. Immediately, about 28
MB returned. After closing several tabs in Konqueror, more came back. Then
I quit Konqueror and even more returned.

The only apps now are 1 instance of Konsole, several pages of Knotes, and 1
instance of Kontact. There is about 12 times as much RAM free now and my
desktop is _considerably_ faster.

Thanks for the hints,
Bob

P.S. Have to look into adding another 512 MB to my machine.
