It may be lame that is slowing things down. I notice that replaygain takes
forever. If I deselect it in SoundKonverter (not a ripper, but a program
that uses lame) the mp3 encoding goes much quicker. If you have control of
the lame command use the --no-replaygain flag.
One way to diagnose this is to try ripping to a non-mp3 format. I noted in
your email that you tried to drag and drop ogg. Did this take as long?
