System broke, Target sbin/init not found

The fsck idea is a good thing to try, since you weren't doing anything package 
related when this happened.

I had something similar happen due to package upgrade-related problems.  I 
booted the live CD, mounted up the hard drive install and chrooted into it, 
then I found the init package(s) in /var/cache/apt/archives, installed with 
dpkg -i, and all was well.  I was lucky that those packages hadn't been 
purged from the cache yet.
