Yes.  I both got the icon on the desktop and right clicked on it, and
put the panel applet on the panel and right clicked on that to "safely
remove".

The desktop icon showed no errors, but with the panel applet, a number
of errors were shown but eventually it unmounted...

No, the files were copied and then checked to see if they contained
null bytes. All of them showed OK in Konqueror and Krusader.

I hadn't thought of that - Ill try it and let you know the outcome
