Did you unmount the mp3 player before you disconnected it?
Perhaps the changes weren't written to the filesystem - seemed the
copying surprising fast to you?
Try copying some files to your player and start the command "sync" on
the console.
If it takes some time to get the prompt back, there was much data in
the caches that had to be written to the player.
