An executable .desktop file... foomf!... My brain just exploded.

Are you sure about that? Doesn't making it executable demand that it's either 
a binary or it has a magic byte and a path to what must execute it?

Perhaps that desktop file will still be opened and obeyed by KDE without being 
set '+x'?

Dunno. Just stuffing brains back into my head. :)
