k3b on Dapper

I happily ran k3b on Kubuntu and Ubuntu Dapper for about 9 months
with NO problems.  Recently I downloaded updates for Kubuntu and k3b
couldn't find the CD burner.  I switched to Ubuntu on the same
machine and burned the iso so the burner worked.  I downloaded the
updates for Ubuntu and now k3b is does the same thing in Ubuntu.  I
used the included burning package with Ubuntu and burned a back-up CD
with no problem so the burner is still recognized by Ubuntu but not
k3b.  I am burning isos with k3b on the same machine using Debian
Etch with no problem.
